My goal for my project was to design a product that would empower refugees to infuse their personal touch into their new homes, making them feel truly at home. This endeavor demanded affordability and durability as key elements.
The burning question that fueled my research was: How can I harness the potential of an innovative, sustainable, and cost-effective material to craft a solution for refugees?
The project's name is ‘Intertwined Cultures’ because it encapsulates my vision of bridging the gap between Dutch society and refugees. It's a testament to the idea that our cultures aren't distant, but rather beautifully connected, and
we can learn and grow from one another's experiences.
For the print, I have chosen a pattern that represents the Dutch and Syrian cultures. The jasmine (national flower of Syria) and the tulip. These are ‘weaved’ into a pattern.
I also used the meaning and translation of two verses from the Quran as inspiration for word stamps. These show that the moral values of the Arab culture are not much different from the Netherlands.
Compassion - Own strength - Compassion - Guidance
I printed these around some cups in an Arabic font. This is so that the wonder in people arises.
I decided to create a tableware set as my product because, during my interviews, I discovered that the flavors and aromas of herbs and dishes often evoke cherished memories. This dinnerware set is designed to enhance that experience.
To construct the tableware, I utilized recycled paper clay. I made this choice after experimenting with clay sourced from Dutch soil, which unfortunately proved to be less durable and cracked easily. So, I went for the sustainable and robust material: paper clay.
