Design for a future.
Design by Waste is an interactive presentation panel for young designers to show them the potential of residual flows. In such a way that they themselves are inspired to start making and researching at the same time.
Other waste streams may also be exhibited in the future. The wall is designed to be re-mountable. All elements can be replaced by other samples, materials, and texts. I encourage the user to explore the process by inviting them to turn, feel, and smell.
Possible locations: museums, schools, fairs, and exhibitions.
An inspiring environment. A place to stop, to be stimulated,
and to reflect.

During my project, I started working with the residual flow from oat cultivation. Aalter Troshaver to be precise. When oats are grown, husks and oats that are too thin are left over. This can no longer even be used as animal feed or compost. The waste is normally incinerated.
By researching and experimenting, I set to work to discover the material. I have taken inspiration from nature and knowledge from old techniques. By visiting the Schut paper factory and the Nooitgedacht mill, I have gained a lot of knowledge about old techniques and new techniques. While experimenting I discovered that you can make different types of paper from oat waste, it can be formed in a mold, and during the cooking process, the remaining water created a magnificent ocher yellow ink.

The interactive presentation panel 'Design by Waste' shows my graduation process. In such a way that young designers are motivated and inspired to start researching and making by themselves.
As designers, we are at the starting point of a production cycle. We can contribute to solutions for the climate crisis. If we, as designers, implement a behavioral change in our design process and the material choices we make, we can protect nature and our future generations.
The intention of Design by Waste is to broaden the view of young designers to see a waste stream as a valuable resource. With this, I make young designers conscious of material choices in the future.
